桐朋学園大学、ブカレスト音楽大学（旧チプリアン・ポルムベスク音楽院）にて田中雅彦、イオン・ケプテアの両氏にコントラバスを学ぶ。また、ウィーン音楽大学指揮科やシエナ・キジアーナ音楽院、タングルウッド夏期セミナー特待生として指揮を学び、ウーロシュ・ラーヨビッチ、ジュゼッペ・シノーポリ、イルヤ・ムーシン、フェルディナンド・ライトナー、小澤征爾、ベルナルト・ハイティンク各氏に師事した。 1989年、ブカレスト音楽大学在学中にプロオーケストラを指揮してデビュー。1993年ブザンソン青年指揮者コンクールでグランプリ、1998年キリル・コンドラシン国際コンクール第一位を受賞。ほかにもジュネーブ（スイス賞・1995）、プラハの春（1995）、トスカニーニ（1994）各コンクールで上位入賞した。
これまでに、トゥルーズ・キャピトル劇場管弦楽団、ローザンヌ室内管弦楽団、プラハ放送交響楽団、ネザーランド・フィル、ブカレスト「ジョルジュ・エネスク」フィル、スロバキア放送交響楽団、ベルリン交響楽団、イタリア・カターニア・ベッリーニ劇場、中国国家交響楽団、リオ・デ・ジャネイロ・ペトロブラス交響楽団など、ヨーロッパ、アメリカ、ブラジル、アジアの多くのオーケストラに客演。海外での国際交流イベントにも数多く招待され、日本中国国交正常化30周年、日本・ルーマニア修交100周年、マケドニアにおける日本国 ODA 記念、ブラジル移民100周年、日本ドナウ交流年2009などの記念コンサートで指揮を務めている。
日本国内では、東京フィル、東京交響楽団、大阪フィル、関西フィル、広島交響楽団、札幌交響楽団、東京シティ・フィルなど主要オーケストラに客演。大阪シンフォニカー交響楽団（現・大阪交響楽団）音楽監督、ルーマニア放送交響楽団客演指揮者、を歴任。
東京ニューシティ管弦楽団（パシフィックフィルハーモニア東京）とは2005年から首席指揮者、首席客演指揮者、正指揮者として2022年3月まで実に17年にわたり信頼関係を築き、楽団の発展に大きな足跡を残した。
イタリア、ルーマニア、ブラジルの音楽祭やセミナーでは後進の指導にもあたり、イタリアを代表する指揮者コンクール、アントニオ・ベデロッティ・コンクールから審査員として招聘されている。2006年から2014年までは、ブラジル・ロンドリーナ音楽祭（ロンドリーナ大学主催）の首席指揮者を務めた。
近年は作曲活動も活発で、作品は日本をはじめ、ルーマニア、ブラジル、スペイン、イタリア、アメリカ、オーストリアでも演奏されている。2025年にはコントラバス協奏曲が初演された。
2013年には、長年客演しているルーマニア・ブラショフ・フィルハーモニーホール落成記念コンサートおよびシーズン開幕コンサート、ブラショフ・オペラのシーズン開幕公演で指揮を務めた。
著書には、音楽之友社『歌う人のための《第九》合唱譜』、2013年7月刊行の『《第九》虎の巻　歌う人・弾く人・聴く人のためのガイドブック』、2015年3月刊行の『シベリウス《フィンランディア》合唱譜』、『聴きたい曲が見つかる！クラシック入門～毎日が満たされるシーン別名曲（CD付）』（技術評論社）がある。さらに、2021年末には『ベートーヴェン、21世紀のウィーンを歩く。』（集英社）と『ベートーヴェンのトリセツ 指揮者が読み解く天才のスゴさ』（音楽之友社）の2冊が刊行された。
長年の活動に対し、ルーマニア・ブラショフ市およびブラジル・ロンドリーナ市から名誉市民の称号を授与。ルーマニアと日本の相互理解の功績により、令和3年度外務大臣表彰を受けている。
2024年には日本・ドイツ・ルーマニアによる共同プロジェクトとして、ベルリン・フィルハーモニーホールで開催された「ベートーヴェン交響曲第9番初演200周年記念コンサート」を大成功に導いた。2025年には韓国・光州での日韓国交正常化60周年記念コンサートを指揮し、こちらも大きな成功を収めた。

Orchestra conducor- Composer

He studied double bass under Masahiko Tanaka and Ion Captea at Toho Gakuen School of Music and the Bucharest National University of Music (formerly the Ciprian Porumbescu Conservatory). He also studied conducting at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna, the Accademia Musicale Chigiana in Siena, and as a scholarship student at the Tanglewood Music Center, receiving guidance from Uroš Lajovic, Giuseppe Sinopoli, Ilya Musin, Ferdinand Leitner, Seiji Ozawa, and Bernard Haitink. In 1989, while still enrolled at the Bucharest National University of Music, he made his debut conducting a professional orchestra. He won the Grand Prix at the 1993 Besançon International Competition for Young Conductors and First Prize at the 1998 Kirill Kondrashin International Conducting Competition. He also received top prizes at the Geneva Competition (Swiss Prize, 1995), the Prague Spring Competition (1995), and the Toscanini Competition (1994).
He has guest-conducted numerous orchestras across Europe, the United States, Brazil, and Asia, including the Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse, the Lausanne Chamber Orchestra, the Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra, the Bucharest “George Enescu” Philharmonic, the Slovak Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Berlin Symphony Orchestra, the Teatro Massimo Bellini Orchestra in Catania, the China National Symphony Orchestra, and the Petrobras Symphony Orchestra of Rio de Janeiro. He has also been invited to many international cultural exchange events, conducting commemorative concerts such as the 30th Anniversary of Japan–China Normalization, the 100th Anniversary of Japan–Romania Relations, Japan’s ODA Commemoration in North Macedonia, the 100th Anniversary of Japanese Immigration to Brazil, and Japan–Danube Exchange Year 2009.
In Japan, he has appeared with major orchestras including the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra, Tokyo Symphony Orchestra, Osaka Philharmonic Orchestra, Kansai Philharmonic Orchestra, Hiroshima Symphony Orchestra, Sapporo Symphony Orchestra, and the Tokyo City Philharmonic Orchestra. He has served as Music Director of the Osaka Symphony Orchestra.
With the Tokyo New City Orchestra (now Pacific Philharmonia Tokyo), he served as Principal Conductor, Principal Guest Conductor, and Resident Conductor from 2005 to March 2022, contributing significantly to the orchestra’s artistic development over a remarkable 17-year tenure.
He has also dedicated himself to training young musicians at music festivals and masterclasses in Italy, Romania, and Brazil, and has been invited as a jury member for the Antonio Pedrotti Conducting Competition, one of Italy’s leading conducting competitions. From 2006 to 2014, he served as Principal Conductor of the Londrina Music Festival in Brazil (hosted by the State University of Londrina).
In recent years, he has been active as a composer, with his works performed in Japan, Romania, Brazil, Spain, Italy, the United States, and Austria. His Concerto for Double Bass was premiered in 2025.
In 2013, he conducted the opening concert celebrating the completion of the newly built Brașov Philharmonic Hall in Romania—a hall with which he has had a long-standing relationship—as well as the season-opening concerts for both the Brașov Philharmonic and the Brașov Opera.
His publications include Choral Score for Beethoven’s Ninth for Singers (Ongaku No Tomo Sha), The Ninth Handbook: A Guidebook for Singers, Players, and Listeners (2013), Sibelius “Finlandia” Choral Score (2015), and A Beginner’s Guide to Classical Music: Famous Pieces by Scenes That Enrich Your Life (with CD, Gijutsu-Hyoronsha). In 2021, he published two additional books: Walking Through Beethoven’s Vienna in the 21st Century (Shueisha) and The Beethoven Manual: A Conductor’s Guide to the Genius (Ongaku No Tomo Sha).
For his long-standing artistic achievements, he was awarded honorary citizenship by the cities of Brașov (Romania) and Londrina (Brazil), and received the 2021 Ministry of Foreign Affairs Award in recognition of his contributions to Japan–Romania cultural exchange.
In 2024, he led the “200th Anniversary of the Premiere of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony” Commemorative Concert, a Japan–Germany–Romania joint project held at the Berlin Philharmonie, to great success. In 2025, he conducted the concert commemorating the 60th anniversary of Japan–Korea normalization in Gwangju, Korea, which was also highly acclaimed.
